Kaitito / Composers – Hana O’Regan & Charisma Rangipunga
Rohe – Kāi Tahu whānui
Whakamārama / Explanation
I titoa tēnei waiata hei whakanui i te honoka o waekanui i te iwi o Tainui me Kāi Tahu i te tau 2007.
This waiata was composed to commemorate the signing of the document outlining the agreement between Tainui and Kāi Tahu in 2007.
Ānanā, ehara i te hanga!
Ngā taero kua pereperea, kua pāketuhia
Nō hea te toki e manaha?
Nō te rau taniwha, nō te rau tipua
He toki kai runga, he toki kai raro
Kotokoto ana kā wai o kamo
I ngā wai o ngā tira para huarahi
Ringihia atu ana ki a Waikato, ki aWaitaki
Ki ngā whakaeke haumi
Ka ūngutu ngā waka i te awa
E raka te mauī, e raka te katau
Nei rā te tūrua pō o te tini
Whakaheia te kupu ki runga
He ora te whakapiri
Kia ngātahi te hoe ki mua
Ki a tai nui, ki a tai roa
Ki a tai huhua e
Haumi e, hui e
Look there, it is no ordinary thing!
The obstacles have been removed
Where did the axe that cleared the way come from?
It came from the many chiefs and great leaders
An adze above, an adze below
The tears of the eyes trickle
With the memories of those who paved the way
They flow to Waikato, to Waitaki
Join the leaders who can secure the canoe
Their vessels have converged in the river
The left is agile, the right is adept
Here is the vision of the many
The word is fulfilled
in broad daylight
There is strength in unity
May we paddle together
to the great tides, the long tides
to the tides of bounty
Drive forward, drive forward
Unite, gather forth
resolution has been achieved!
