Ngāi Tahu Farming

While on the surface our farms may appear like others, there are significant differences.

There is a high level of input from both cultural and technical advisors. There is also the commitment to and investment in leading farm technology. While productivity is obviously vital, a Manawhenua Working Party provides advice on the cultural, environmental and social aspects of our developments. We are also committed to and invest heavily in leading farm technology.

Our advisory team includes representatives from Lincoln University, South Island Dairy Development Centre and key professionals who consult on animal and pasture performance. We have a genuine commitment to best practice farming and to the continuous improvement of environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes for our operations.

The best and most sophisticated technology is used on our farms to minimise our effect on the environment and to help maximise farm production. This includes variable rate irrigation, soil moisture indicators, weather forecasting, GPS fertiliser application, plus in-shed feeding and stock management systems.

Ngāi Tahu Farming is a burgeoning farming business that manages dairy, dairy grazing, sheep and beef grazing along with high country farming operations at Lake Whakatipu.

Eyrewell is a region 40km north west of Christchurch which sits within the tribal area of Ngāi Tūāhuriri, a Ngāi Tahu sub tribe. At Eyrewell, there are six operational dairy farms that cover 2,000 hectares in total with each farm having a 64-bail rotary dairy shed and a herd of 1,400 cows. In the future the total area of farmland will be 6,700 hectares and will incorporate 150 hectares of native bush.

Ngāi Tahu Farming also has 36,000 hectares over three High Country Stations at Lake Whakatipu. These properties are farmed as sheep, deer and cattle breeding stations.

Over time Ngāi Tahu Farming will grow as Ngāi Tahu Property completes its developments and has the potential to become a 60,000 hectare farming operation.
