Earthquake Response

Once again Ngāi Tahu as an iwi is facing the challenges of responding to a natural disaster of immense proportions within our takiwā following the November 14 earth quake centred near Hanmer Springs.

The welfare of Ngāi Tahu whānau and the community of Kaikōura is the priority for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu at this time; and of course, our thoughts are with the two families who have lost loved ones as a result of the quakes.

We have deployed staff in the field and are working with a range of agencies to assist relief efforts. We have three volunteer teams working in Christchurch, Cheviot and Kaikōura, and are also coordinating emergency accommodation at Tuahiwi, Rehua and Wairewa marae for people evacuated from Kaikōura.

It is early days in the response effort and we are very grateful for the immense support we have already received and the offers of help we continue to receive from individuals, businesses, organisations and iwi.

Because of the nature of the situation we are constantly assessing the needs of whānau and how we can most effectively contribute – we will be able to match your offer against the priority needs at the time.

Any offers of help will be gratefully accepted, but please understand that we may not be able to utilise your offer straight away and we are unable to accept goods without prior arrangement.
