Statement from Mark Solomon re: Te Kura Kaupapa Maori immersion schools in Ōtautahi
Below is a statement from Mark Solomon, Kaiwhakahaere Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu
Assertions about Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu supporting a charter school are incorrect. There is not enough information about charter schools at present, and as such there are no plans in the pipeline from our perspective.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Ngāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnanga have not been consulted about the proposed government plans to merge Kura in Christchurch.
At the moment Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is engaged with affected kura and understands that they are extremely concerned about their future. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu supports the extension of Māori-medium education throughout Christchurch and any reduction in services would be inconsistent with this kaupapa. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu will be looking for constructive ways forward that elevates the educational achievements of Māori in this region. Kura kaupapa schools have been an integral part of this and our concerns are that our children continue to get access to quality education within a practicable distance of their home in the schools of their choice.
