Awarua Rūnanga Representative
Ngā mihi mahana kia koutou ngā; Iwi o te motu
Maria has represented Awarua Rūnanga since 1999. Over those nine years she has participated in some monumental decisions regarding the future direction of Ngāi Tahu. For Maria, regional development is the key to a strong collective as rūnanga have the responsibility for delivering to grassroots tribal members with limited resources.
There have been turbulent times for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu over the last few years, however Maria believes those times are a test of endurance and commitment to the kaupapa and whakataukī – Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei. As a mother, and taua she is constantly driven to help build a solid and innovative tribe that will allow our mokopuna to be able to participate effectively on a global platform.
Maria would like to give a special thanks to all the participants from the Bluff Working Group, Ngāi Tahu Seafood and Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation Ltd for their sterling work in developing a fair and reasonable allocation model that looks to securing Ngāi Tahu fishers into the future in line with Manawhenua, Manamoana.
Noho ora mai ki a koutou
Kia tau te rangimarie.
