Wairewa Rūnanga Representative
James is a 58 year-old father of three, matua whangai to two and koro to Mila, Hawaiki, Kurawaka, Niko and Maiana. He is the third generation in his family to be involved in Ngāi Tahu governance, with both his father and grandfather sitting on the Ngāi Tahu Māori Trust Board. He has been involved with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu hui since early 1997.
Ahakoa ko Wairewa te mea nui, James is committed to the constitutional, cultural and commercial aspects of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. He is eager to advance whānau, hapu and iwi aspirations through effective and efficient use of the assets and resources developed by Ngāi Tahu since Te Kereme.
James had 20 years in radio broadcasting in Christchurch before ‘retiring’ at 42 to study fulltime for three years at Lincoln University. He graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Property Studies.
After having a shareholding in the development of 22 apartments around Christchurch he returned to radio in 2004 to start up and manage a new Hip-Hop and RnB station (Flava) for The Radio Network in Auckland. He is moving back to Christchurch at the beginning of 2014 to be the breakfast host at The Breeze thus returning to a more hands-on role at the rūnanga and marae.
