Agria-Hōaka Scholarship

The Agria-Hōaka scholarship is an extraordinary opportunity for committed, hard-working Ngāi Tahu individuals to spend time studying the Chinese language at a premier university in China for one year.

Liam Stoneley (Agria-Hōaka Scholar) on top of Mount Hua, one of China’s five sacred mountains.

During your time in China, you will be immersed in Chinese language and culture studies, and attend seminars on Chinese economics, history and society by university academics.

The scholarship includes air travel, accommodation, tuition fees and a living allowance for the duration of the academic year.

“Returning home after 12 months living in China was the ultimate reverse culture shock. I couldn’t believe how well I had assimilated and appreciated a culture/environment that is very different to the one I grew up in. I returned with an increased sense of confidence and a greater clarity about what I want to do in the future. I also returned with new knowledge around the culture and language of one of New Zealand’s largest trading partners, which I hope will help me professionally in the future.”

Dannielle Thian (Ngāi Tahu – Awarua Rūnanga), Agria-Hōaka Scholar
