Pūtea Whai Tohu is an exciting new opportunity for Ngāi Tahu whānau members to study to be an Environmental Advisor OR a Journalist.

Pūtea Whai Tohu is a full programme of support and includes benefits such as

Environmental Advisor Scholarship

This scholarship is for Ngāi Tahu whānau members who wish to become an Environmental Advisor and includes course fees and paid work experience. The recipient will study environmental planning, science, law or mapping at a tertiary institution in New Zealand.

We are looking for students who can demonstrate a strong academic ability and a well-rounded community connection that you can show at either a whānau, hapū, Papatipu Rūnanga or iwi level.

Key information

Applications are taken annually in August/September.

We welcome applications from those who:

  • Are a registered member of Ngāi Tahu
  • Can commit to a programme of full-time study
  • Will be accepted into a relevant qualification at a NZ tertiary institution
  • Can demonstrate a strong academic ability and a well-rounded community connection that you can show at either a whānau, hapū, Papatipu Rūnanga or iwi level

Journalist Scholarship

The Office of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu has created an exciting new scholarship for Ngāi Tahu whānui.

This is an entry level scholarship for students studying the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications at the New Zealand Broadcasting School, at the Ara Institute of Canterbury. It is funded by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.    

Key information

Applications are taken annually in August/September.

We welcome applications from those who:

  • Are a registered member of Ngāi Tahu
  • Have been accepted into the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications at NZBS, Ara Institute of Canterbury
  • Are able to commit to a programme of full-time study and work experience
  • Can provide a letter of support from a kaumātua
  • Have an understanding of the history of Ngāi Tahu
