New Directors of Ngāi Tahu Seafoods

21 August 2009

The Chair of Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation Ltd, Trevor Burt, announced today that Brian Rhoades, Robert Pooley and Colin Topi have been appointed as Directors on Ngāi Tahu Seafoods Ltd, with Dr Rhoades appointed as Chair.

The appointments follow a decision by Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation that separate boards be appointed to each major Ngāi Tahu subsidiary, thereby bringing specific expertise to each entity.

Trevor Burt says stakeholders in seafood will appreciate the expertise that Dr Rhoades, Mr Pooley and respected fisherman Mr Topi bring to Ngāi Tahu Seafood.

Dr Rhoades has held a number of senior and strategic executive positions in the South Island. He was General Manager and Chief Executive for Sealord Products Ltd from 1985 to 1994, and more recently Chief Operating Officer for Nelson Pine Industries. He has held many directorships including recently chairing Industrial Research Ltd, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and Nelson Electricity Ltd.

Dr Rhoades holds a PhD in mechanical engineering, and is a Fellow of both the Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand and the Institute of Directors.

Robert Pooley, Ngāi Tahu, is owner/director of Marine Farming Solutions and has a lifelong association with the seafood industry, particularly with the lobster industry and more recently with the development of the NZ Greenshell™ Mussel industry. He has been president of the Marine Farming Association Inc since 1999 and is the current MFA appointed director on Aquaculture NZ Ltd, which is the lead agency responsible for the governance of aquaculture in NZ.

Colin Topi is Ngāi Tahu, and is a fisher from the Murihiku (Southland) area. His family have fished for generations, and have a significant presence in the Murihiku fishing industry. Colin was a Shareholder / Director for the Bluff Fisherman’s Co-Operative. He has also been instrumental in supporting long-term succession planning for Ngāi Tahu fishers.

Trevor Burt says the calibre of this new board is a clear indicator of the regard in which Ngāi Tahu companies are held. These men are pragmatic leaders who also bring with them a vision for Aotearoa New Zealand and for New Zealand’s seafood industry. We are delighted to welcome them.

Brian, Robert and Colin will join Ross Keenan who will represent Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation Ltd on the Board.
