Ngāi Tahu congratulates Ngāti Kuia
Friday 22 October 2010
Tomorrow Ngāti Kuia reaches a significant milestone with the Signing Ceremony for Te Whakatau, the Ngāti Kuia Deed of Settlement.
This Signing Ceremony bears testament to the many long years of dedication, sacrifice and determination displayed by the leadership of Ngāti Kuia and indeed, by their tūpuna, who have long carried Ngāti Kuia’s grievances to the Crown seeking acknowledgment for the injustices of the past.
Kaiwhakahaere for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Mark Solomon, says, “The Deed of Settlement will lay the foundations for Ngāti Kuia to further express its inherent mana and kaitiakitanga for the benefit of the land, taonga and people.”
“Ngāi Tahu wishes Ngāti Kuia all the very best for this historic occasion and looks forward to Ngāti Kuia joining us as a post settlement iwi. We understand the passion that brought Ngāti Kuia to this point and which will take them into a future where they will implement their tribal vision.”
A delegation from Ngāi Tahu, led by Tā Tipene O’Regan, will attend Te Whakatau to acknowledge and celebrate this historic occasion for Ngāti Kuia.
