The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a new Ngāi Tahu representative to the Meridian Energy Te Waiau Mahika Kai Trust.

Functions of the Te Waiau Mahika Kai Trust

  • To provide an enhanced Mahika Kai resource within the Waiau Catchment by improving habitat conditions and increasing the diversity and abundance of Mahika Kai resources.
  • To restore and enhance the social, cultural and economic relationship of Ngāi Tahu with the resources of the Waiau Catchment.
  • To maximise opportunities for Kāi Tahu to harvest the Mahika Kai resources of the Waiau Catchment.
  • To promote the enhancement and sustainable management of Mahika Kai.
  • To identify and evaluate areas of the Waiau Catchment worthy of protection, restoration, improvement, creation or procurement primarily as fisheries; mahika kai plant and wildlife habitat.
  • To disburse by way of grants such proportion of its funds each year as it considers in its sole discretion appropriate for the purpose of carrying out its functions.
  • To fund such measures as may be needed to sustain native fisheries, mahika kai plant and wildlife species, including (but not limited to) funding the implementation of any trapping and transporting measures found necessary to sustain the eel fishery.
  • To undertake any research that furthers the objects of the Trust.

Purpose of the role
The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Te Waiau Mahika Kai Trust ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Trust.

  • Ngāi Tahu resource management practice and tikanga.
  • Environmental management and Water quality.
  • Native freshwater fisheries.
  • Education and social development.
  • Financial management.
  • Strategic planning.

Meeting details
Approx. two meetings in Invercargill per year with catch-up via email as needed. Remuneration of $250 per meeting payable by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
