Settlement Photo Gallery

This week we celebrate the anniversary of the enactment of the Ngāi Tahu Settlement Bill. This occurred on 1 October 1998, the day the Bill was signed by the Governor General to become an Act of the New Zealand Parliament (Date of assent).

This gallery of photographs shows the various stages of the settlement and passing of the Ngāi Tahu Settlement Act, beginning with the Signing of the Deed of Settlement at Kaikōura on 21 November 1997. There are also many photos showing Ngāi Tahu in Parliament for the final reading of the Bill, which occurred in Wellington on 29 September 1998. Two months later there are photographs of the official Crown Apology to Ngāi Tahu. The apology was given by then Prime Minister Jenny Shipley at Ōnuku on 29 November 1998.
