Several weeks ago we welcomed the arrival of Frida Grace into our extended whānau. The build-up to Frida’s arrival has been a world journey for my niece, who deliberately chose to return to New Zealand so that her child would be born into an environment of whānau support.

At Hui-ā-Iwi in November last year, kaumātua were treated to a delightful High Tea event hosted by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. Among the waiters was the kaiwhakahaere who donned an apron and displayed skills in tea pouring that could have landed him a job at The Ritz.
This whirlwind tour of iwi, kāinga, whānau and individual-led tribal activities showed me that we are far from being a passive bunch. It emphasised that we are a vibrant, passionate and determined lot who want the best for our whānau in every which way you could imagine – phew!
