Growing Future Leaders

Te Pōkai Ao is an initiative by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu to grow new generations of innovative leaders who are in touch with our history and prepared for our future. Each year, successful applicants attend noho marae in Te Waipounamu, before travelling to Silicon Valley in San Francisco or O’ahu in Hawai’i – opportunities that allow them to connect to their Ngāi Tahutanga and learn more about career pathways in STEAM-related fields. Three years in, the far-reaching impact of these haerenga are beginning to be felt.

Jeanine Tamati-Elliffe (Kāi Te Ruahikihiki, Kāi Te Pahi, Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Mutunga) wanted te reo for her kids. So she had to learn it one step ahead of them.

My tamariki were amazed by this story about Tamanui and through this book increased their knowledge about the survival of one of our most endangered birds, the kōkako, since the arrival of predator animals in our forests. This story tells of how Tamanui became the last surviving member of his family – or so he thought. He sets off on a journey to find a new home when he hears new kōkako birdsong… however it was a trick and he was captured instead! In time, under the protection of the people of Ngāti Tama in Taranaki, Tamanui finds a new family and the kōkako of the Moki Forest can continue to regenerate once more.
