Ngāi Tahu Farming
Ngāi Tahu Farming are custodians for 9,200 hectares of pastoral farming land in the Waimakariri and Hurunui catchments, and three high country stations at the head of Lake Whakatipu comprising nearly 30,000 hectares. At the core of all Ngāi Tahu Farming activities is a firm commitment to work closely with mana whenua, and a steadfast promise to protect the natural environment.
Ngāi Tahu Farming encompasses dairy, beef breeding and finishing, and sheep breeding and finishing farms. Our innovative farm systems utilise latest technologies to monitor and measure animal performance and preserve the health of the land.
In August 2022, in partnership with Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the Ministry for Primary Industries, Ngāi Tahu Farming launched Te Whenua Hou Te Whenua Whitiora, a ground-breaking research programme aiming to validate the science of regenerative dairy farming. The seven-year study aims to generate scientific and financial insights that will contribute to the development of a feasible alternative farming system in the coming years.
Ngāi Tahu Forestry
Ngāi Tahu Forestry aims for all its products to represent the unique story of the iwi, and to convey genuine care for the land and trees.
Established in 2000, the Forestry portfolio now comprises approximately 45,500 hectares of forest blocks across 20 forests between Westport and Franz Josef. A cutting-right partnership with Fiera Comox across the West Coast Plantations was signed in June 2024, with Ngāi Tahu retaining ownership of the whenua.
