Pūtea Manaaki (Sports Grant)

The purpose of this grant is to recognise and support Ngāi Tahu whānau in regional, national and international achievement in sport.

In the first instance, this grant is to be paid to the sporting body, event or organisation of the sporting event or activity. Where proof of fees or costs incurred by applicant can be provided, consideration will be given to pay the applicant directly.

Eligibility

  • Registered with Ngāi Tahu Whakapapa
  • Have been selected to represent your region or nation in an event (competition or tournament)
  • Limited to one application per 12 months, unless you are representing at the next tier (regional to national or national to international), in the same sport
  • Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu staff are not eligible to apply.

This grant is open all year round. The grant can not be used retrospectively.

Applications must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the event date.

Level of funding available & Definitions of representation levels

  • $250.00 for Regional representation

    Regional representation means being selected from local representative teams to represent a regional team, which would compete against other regional sides at inter-regional/national tournaments.
    For example: Representing Southland at the Under 20 Basketball Nationals.

  • $500.00 for National representation

    National representation means selection to represent an officially recognised National Team, which would complete against other countries teams within your country of residence.
    For example: Representing New Zealand at the Hockey World Cup held in Auckland.

  • $1,000.00 for Internation representation

    International representation means selection to represent an officially recognised National Team, which would complete against other countries teams outside your country of residence.
    For example: Representing New Zealand at the Hockey World Cup held in England.

What you need to apply

  • Confirmation of selection to represent regionally or nationally at an event, provided by the sporting body.
  • Information for payment to your sporting body including:
    • A pre-printed or bank-verified deposit slip or bank statement for the sporting body bank account showing the bank account name and number
    • The GST number of the sporting body if applicable
    • A contact email and phone number for the sporting body

Please note failure to provide all information will delay the processing of your application and/or could result in your being ineligible for a grant.

Apply on Te Kopa Ora - Ngāi Tahu Grants Portal using your Ngāi Tahu log in details. You will need your six-digit whakapapa registration number and password to log in. If you are a Parent or Guardian applying on behalf of a minor, you will need to apply using their log in details.

What we don’t fund:

  • School, tertiary and club level representation or events
  • Events where a confirmation of selection from a regional or national sporting body or organisation cannot be supplied e.g. self-selection or self-entry sports.
  • Training and development squads, camps or events
  • Umpires, referees, coaches or team managers/staff
