Mint Renewables and Ngāi Tahu Holdings Partner to Accelerate Renewable Energy Development

Aug 4, 2025

Mint Renewables (Mint) and Ngāi Tahu Holdings are teaming up to develop long-term renewable energy projects across New Zealand.

Established by Infratil and Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation in 2022, Mint aims to be a leading player in a rapid and sustainable transition to renewable energy.

Through a new strategic joint venture, “Mint Aotearoa”, the two partners will develop high quality large scale renewable energy projects, including wind, solar and storage solutions.

“This partnership marks a major step forward for Ngāi Tahu Holdings,” says Chief Executive Todd Moyle. “We’re excited to launch Mint Aotearoa and step into the renewable energy sector.

“Together with Mint, we will accelerate the development of renewable energy projects that will deliver lasting benefits for future generations.”

The partnership combines Mint’s supportive long-term capital and deep technical expertise in renewable energy with Ngāi Tahu Holdings’ strong local commercial presence, rooted in Ngāi Tahu values and iwi governance structures.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Kaiwhakahaere (Chair) Justin Tipa is excited for what the new joint venture offers. He says plans are already underway to partner with Ngāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnanga to develop projects on their whenua.

“Energy development has always been a priority for Ngāi Tahu. This joint venture is a bold next step as we continue to turn vision into action. Working with our people on our whenua will unlock investment opportunities and deliver value for regional New Zealand.

“We’re also looking to partner with other iwi and landowners across the country to create jobs and build resilient infrastructure that meets the needs of our communities.”

Infratil’s Chief Executive Jason Boyes welcomed the partnership and Mint’s expansion into New Zealand.

“Mint Aotearoa represents the next chapter in our commitment to long-term value creation through renewable energy. With Infratil holding a 73% stake in Mint, we’re proud to support its expansion into Aotearoa alongside Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation.

“This partnership reflects our belief that combining deep technical expertise with strong local relationships is key to unlocking sustainable growth and delivering enduring impact.”

Priya Grewal, Director of Mint, says Mint Aotearoa aims to be a renewable energy partner of choice for stakeholders and consumers in New Zealand

“We are thrilled to have developed this strategic partnership with Ngāi Tahu, and we are excited to bring the Mint team’s development expertise to the New Zealand market as we develop assets to increase the supply of renewable energy in New Zealand.”

Kim van Hattum, Mint’s Head of Australia & New Zealand added, “Partnering with Ngāi Tahu is a privilege. Our organisations have strong alignment in values and share a long-term approach to sustainable investment.”

“Mint Aotearoa is committed to engaging respectfully with the communities in which we plan, build and operate projects, to be sensitive to environmental and cultural values and to make a positive contribution to the regions in which we will develop our projects.”
