Hui-ā-iwi Whānau Activities

Ngāti Kurī is excited to offer whānau attending Hui-ā-Iwi the opportunity to participate in these awesome activities.

Please check the timing and suitability information for these activities before making a booking and ensure you have registered to attend Hui-ā-Iwi as well. Registrations for activities will close as indicated on the registration form or as soon as the available places have been filled.

Dark Sky Project

Join the team at Dark Sky Project for a guided astronomy experience. This experience combines Māori astronomy, storytelling and science that the whole whānau will enjoy.

Date and time: Friday 22 November from 8.30pm at the Kaikōura racecourse following the hākari. 
Duration: 45 minutes
Suitable for: This is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Rongoā Bush Walk at Puhi Puhi Valley

The use of plant-based remedies is a central part of Rongoā Māori – the traditional healing system of our tīpuna. Find out about some of the plants used in Rongoā Māori during a guided walk through the ngahere.

Places available: 24 in total

Dates and times: The rongoā bush walk is happening on Saturday 23 November, departing from the Kaikōura racecourse at 1pm.
Duration: The total trip time is approximately 2.5 hours, including return transportation by van to the track.
Suitable for: Adults and older tamariki with a reasonable degree of physical fitness as the track is steep in parts and could be slippery. The track is unsealed so is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Whale Watch

Whale Watch is an award-winning New Zealand nature-based tourism company, owned and operated by our Ngāti Kurī whānau. Whale Watch is generously offering whānau attending Hui-ā-Iwi the opportunity to experience Whale Watch free of charge.

Places available: 97 per trip (388 in total)

Dates and times: Whale Watch will be operating two free tours per day on Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November, departing from the Kaikōura racecourse at 11.15am and 2pm.
Duration: The total trip time is 2.5 hours, including bus transfers to and from the racecourse.
Suitable for: Whale Watch is suitable for adults and children aged 3 years and older. If you are pregnant, have mobility issues or a medical condition requiring assistance, please provide details when registering.

Takahanga Marae Whare Taonga Tours

Our Whare Taonga is now home to more than 400 taonga and artefacts discovered in the aftermath of the Kaikōura earthquake in 2016. Join our whanaunga, Te Awhina, in this guided tour.  

Places available: 20 per session or as soon as the available places have been filled.

Dates and times: Tours will be running every hour on Saturday 23 November between 10am and 4pm; and Sunday 24 November between 10am and 12pm. Meeting point is at the Takahanga Marae car park. Whānau can take their car and park at the marae. 
Duration: The tour takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
Suitable for: This is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The tour is wheelchair accessible.
