Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is seeking nominations to appoint Ngāi Tahu representatives to three regional Fish and Game Councils.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the sustainable management of freshwater fisheries and game bird resources while ensuring Ngāi Tahu values, interests and aspirations are represented in regional decision-making.

About the Fish and Game Councils
Fish and Game Councils are responsible for managing and enhancing sports fish and game bird resources on behalf of licensed anglers and hunters. Their key functions include:

• Managing, maintaining and enhancing sports fish and game resources.
• Promoting responsible participation through education and advocacy.
• Preparing regional management plans, annual operational plans and identifying research priorities.
• Representing regional interests in the setting and distribution of licence levies.
• Working collaboratively with local Conservation Boards and other stakeholders.
• Issuing licences for sports fishing and game bird hunting.

About the Role
As a Ngāi Tahu representative, you will provide a strong tribal voice around the Council table by:

• representing Ngāi Tahu perspectives, values and interests in Council discussions and decision-making;
• ensuring matters of significance to Ngāi Tahu are appropriately communicated to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu; and
• advocating for outcomes that recognise and uphold the commitments of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement in relation to Fish and Game.

Skills and Experience
Applicants should ideally have:

• an interest in freshwater fisheries and game bird management, preferably as a licensed sports fisher and/or game bird hunter;
• knowledge of freshwater fisheries, game bird hunting and the waterways within their region;
• an understanding of Ngāi Tahu values and perspectives relating to freshwater, mahinga kai and Fish and Game functions;
• the ability to confidently represent and communicate Ngāi Tahu interests; and
• a willingness to understand and promote the relevant provisions of the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement relating to Fish and Game Councils.

• Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game Council x1
• North Canterbury Fish & Game Council x1
• West Coast Fish & Game Council x1

Nelson Marlborough Region

North Canterbury Region
Eligible Papatipu Rūnanga:

• Ōnuku Rūnanga
• Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata
• Wairewa Rūnanga
• Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga
• Te Taumutu Rūnanga
• Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke

West Coast Region
Eligible Papatipu Rūnanga:

• Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae
• Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio
