Our Portfolio

Ngāi Tahu Investments’ portfolio spans numerous sectors that are important to the iwi. As this portfolio evolves, Ngāi Tahu Investments seeks partnerships with businesses that share their values and growth aspirations. Preferring an active role in direct investments, Ngāi Tahu Investments appoints board directors to enhance business performance. The organisation also maintains a flexible co-investment strategy, collaborating with experienced partners.

Fidelity Life

Fidelity Life is the largest locally owned and operated life insurer in Aotearoa. Ngāi Tahu Investments has invested alongside NZ Super to support Fidelity’s acquisition of Westpac Life NZ, resulting in a 24.9 percent stake in the combined business. The investment was completed in early 2022.

Hilton Haulage

Hilton Haulage is a leading transport and logistics supplier to Canterbury businesses. In 2016, alongside the founding shareholders, Ngāi Tahu Investments invested into Hilton Haulage to support their growth aspirations. Through this investment, Ngāi Tahu Investments owns a 50% stake of Hilton Haulage.

Sanford

Sanford is New Zealand’s largest aquaculture company, second largest quota owner (c.20% of total quota) and one of the largest fishing companies. It has six processing facilities, employing over 1,500 staff. Products are sold both domestically and internationally to retailers and food service customers, including Europe, North America, Australia, China and Japan. Ngāi Tahu Investments holds a 19.9% share.

Listed Investments

Ngāi Tahu Investments holds diversified share portfolios of domestic and international listed companies. We manage our own environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index through a screening process that is focused on ethical practices, climate change, and sustainability factors that align with Ngāi Tahu values. These listed investments enable a direct, low-cost and diversified exposure, and provide Ngāi Tahu Holdings with a source of funds that are readily accessible.

New Economy Strategy

Ngāi Tahu Investment’s New Economy Strategy, managed by GreenMount Capital, enables direct investment in companies aligned with ‘new economy’ characteristics such as alternative proteins, digitisation, automation and AI, energy transition and the circular economy.

Our existing ‘new economy’ investments include:

  • Leaft, a Te Waipounamu based business producing plant protein to reduce the environmental impact of food production.
  • Shippit, a company offering smart shipping solutions to retailers and manufacturers.
  • Banqer, an education platform delivering financial literacy in schools
  • Sharesies, a NZ-based wealth platform for retail investors; and
  • Mint Innovation, recovering precious metals from e-waste.
Whale Watch Kaikōura

Ngāi Tahu Investments has been supporting the multi award-winning nature tourism company Whale Watch Kaikōura since it began in 1987. We hold a 43.5% shareholding in the business, which hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year.

We seek to invest in private businesses that complement our existing portfolio, whether in current or new sectors, and share our values and growth aspirations.
