Strategy & Environment
Strategy & Environment is responsible for protecting and advancing the Ngāi Tahu Settlement, engaging with the Crown across a range of kaupapa, and safeguarding te taiao. Focused on improving outcomes for the iwi and Papatipu Rūnanga, the group comprises Te Whakaariki – Strategy & Influence and Te Ao Tūroa.
Te Whakaariki | Strategy & Influence (S&I)
S&I provides expert advice and support to Papatipu Rūnanga and the wider Te Rūnanga Group to ensure the Ngāi Tahu Settlement is upheld, protected and advanced. The team holds the Crown to account on its Te Tiriti obligations and other legislative requirements.
S&I leads the development of strategic policy advice in response to changing political, legislative, and natural environments. Through its relationships with the Crown, the team works to influence government reforms to protect the Settlement and advance Ngāi Tahu rangatiratanga.
Te Ao Tūroa
Te Ao Tūroa works alongside Papatipu Rūnanga to uphold kaitiakitanga across Te Waipounamu. The team leads the care of significant lands, waters, and taonga species; strengthens mahinga kai and whānau connection to whenua; and ensures Ngāi Tahu values are reflected in environmental and planning decisions. Their mahi supports the protection of te taiao and the wellbeing of Ngāi Tahu people and places.
