Strategy & Environment
Strategy & Environment is charged with protecting and advancing the Ngāi Tahu settlements, engaging with the Crown across a range of kaupapa, and protecting te taiao. Striving to improve outcomes for iwi and Papatipu Rūnanga, the Strategy & Environment Group comprises Te Whakaariki and Te Ao Tūroa.
Strategy & Environment is focused on protecting and advancing Ngāi Tahu interests and asserting rangatiratanga and kaitiakitanga in the takiwā.
Te Whakaariki | Strategy & Influence
Te Whakaariki provides expert advice and support to Papatipu Rūnanga and the wider Te Runanga Group on a broad range of kaupapa to ensure that the Ngāi Tahu Settlements are upheld and protected. Te Whakaariki also holds the Crown to account on its Te Tiriti obligations and other legislative requirements.
Te Whakaariki leads the development of strategic policy advice in response to changing political, legislative, and natural environments. Through its relationships with the Crown, Te Whakaariki seeks to influence government reforms to protect the Ngāi Tahu Settlement and advance Ngāi Tahu rangatiratanga.

The Te Rūnanga Group is supported by Te Whakaariki to strengthen and leverage strategic relationships with iwi, commercial and apolitical groups within Aotearoa and internationally to advocate and advance Ngāi Tahu rights and interests.
Morning Star Reserve
In October 2023, the Minister of Conservation vested in Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu the administration and control of the part of Morning Star Beach Recreation Reserve in Queenstown.
