New Poutini Waiora Facility Opens in Māwhera

Kaupapa Māori health and social service provider Poutini Waiora officially opened the doors to its new purpose-built facility in Māwhera (Greymouth) on Monday 10 August, marking a significant milestone for health and wellbeing services across Te Tai o Poutini.

The $3.2 million facility, located at 62 Shakespeare Street, has been developed to meet the growing demand for integrated health and social services in the region. The building stands on whenua owned by Poutini Ngāi Tahu through Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae and Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio who invested in the build.

More than 100 people attended the opening, with whānau from Poutini Ngāi Tahu leading a blessing to formally open the facility. Designed as a welcoming and accessible space, the new hub will provide whānau with access to a range of health and wellbeing services under one roof, including Kai Puku food rescue services, mental health and addiction support and Rongoā Māori.

Poutini Waiora Service Manager Zee Tana said the new facility reflects the organisation's strong connection to the community it serves.

"This building is in the heart of Māwhera, right in the community. We have a real relational connection and a responsibility to be part of our community," he said.

Tana said the facility will help ensure healthcare and support services remain accessible to whānau where they are needed most.

Pōkeka Poutini Ngāi Tahu Chief Executive Lisa Tumahai said the new facility allows them to better serve whānau needs.

"We are seeing a higher level of need, with the cost of living” she said.

"We are fortunate to have services that provide more well-rounded support for our communities."

The new facility represents an important investment in the future wellbeing of Te Tai o Poutini, creating a central space where whānau can access holistic care and support for generations to come.
