Hydrogen Kit in Schools

Murihiku Regeneration’s He Ao Hou programme is introducing Hydrogen Kits to kura for a green energy future.

Organisers say this is a wonderful opportunity to introduce an innovative technology to the children.

“We are encouraging our young people to start seeing the changes that are coming for the future,” says Ivan Hodgetts, Kaiwhakahaere o Te Ara Aukati Kore, Murihiku Regeneration.

This evolutionary kaupapa emerged from a conversation between Terry Nicholas, Hokonui Upoko and Murihiku Regeneration Programme Director, and Awarua Upoko Tā Tipene O’Regan. We agreed that hydrogen and renewable energy would play an important part in our region and the world’s energy future, says Terry. He wants children in Murihiku to understand the opportunities and career pathways that come from efforts to mitigate climate change and support energy transition.

A Hydrogen Kit is used to split hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen and oxygen store their energies separately. Once the oxygen and hydrogen are reconnected it gives the energy back.

Hydrogen Kits will be making their way around to nine other Murihiku schools over the next few weeks.
